The topic of "green washing" is incredibly widespread in the cosmetics industry. It suggests to the customer that they are buying a natural product. Manufacturers work with packaging, coloring and visual elements. For example, the mention of natural oils is often enough to make the customer believe that they are buying a green product. We recommend looking out for natural cosmetic certificates such as Cosmos Organic, Cosmos Natural or Austria Bio Garantie. Natural cosmetics certificates evaluate products based on the ingredients used as well as their farming practices.
Natural products cost more than petroleum products, even if there is unfortunately no conclusive explanation for this. And raw materials from organic farming cost even more. This has to do with the fact that they are often small farms that treat nature and the soil with care. Manual labor is an important factor and all the people involved in production are also paid fairly.
Apart from individual components such as the fragrance, the use of organically grown raw materials is a must in my eyes. Baby skin is so thin and permeable to all substances it comes into contact with, and unfortunately this also applies to harmful substances. It should therefore be a matter of course to pay attention to appropriate quality here.
For us, it was a matter of course from the outset that the entire Alma Babycare range would be certified by Austria Biogarantie.
As there are no uniform regulations at European level, we rely on private standards. The COSMOS standard, Natrue and ECEAE are international guarantees for corresponding raw materials and production. In Austria, there is the "Organic Cosmetics and Natural Cosmetics" code chapter, which is certified by Austria Biogarantie. The quality seals of these certifications can always be found on the packaging of the products. This provides some orientation in the existing flood of products.
However, many manufacturers have simply developed their own emblems that suggest that the cosmetics have been produced or tested accordingly. However, this is not the case; the products merely comply with internal standards. It is important to know that natural cosmetics are not the same as organic cosmetics, but that the latter is a sub-area. This is because active plant ingredients can of course also come from non-organic cultivation.
In contrast to kerosene or silicone oils, plant based oils can be easily absorbed by the skin. Although they form a film that feels smooth and pleasant when applied, the skin is hindered in its function by the foreign substances that it does not know what to do with and loses important abilities in the long term. Plant oils differ enormously in this respect, simply in terms of their chemical structure. The skin is able to incorporate oleic acids and secondary plant substances such as antioxidants or vitamins directly into the cell membrane. This applies all the more to the thin, permeable skin of babies.
Essential oils are a highly concentrated plant product. We are particularly concerned about using only organically grown material because any chemicals used in the production of essential oils accumulate. We often hear that essential oils cause skin irritation due to their high concentration - in our experience, this is almost never the case with organically grown products. In most cases, these are oils that have been extracted from conventionally grown plants or that are no longer fresh when used. The dosage also plays an important role - especially with baby products, "less is more" applies here.
Apricot kernel oil has a very delicate scent that blends beautifully with the body scent. This is very important for babies and bonding because the mother's scent is not masked. So baby and parents can smell each other well.
Avocado oil is a multi-talent, it has an almost waxy character, gives the skin a velvety feel and protects very well. At the same time, it penetrates deep into the skin.
We chose poppy seed oil because it absorbs particularly well and easily into the skin, it is very delicate and also a great regional product.
As far as the fragrances are concerned, we opted for "child-friendly" aromas that adults also like to smell.
Mandarin is a calming fragrance and at the same time a real "happiness maker".
Benzoin envelops and provides protection, like an aromatic blanket.
Rose geranium is considered a mediator, it has a harmonizing effect and promotes communication.
Atlas cedar is this huge, strong tree that provides incredible support and roots - this is good for both baby and parents during this turbulent time. The oil with its woody aroma also has a stabilizing effect on the skin and acts as a kind of anti-histamine.
They are reduced, almost minimalist feel-good products with that certain something and made from very, very high-quality ingredients. An oil is a simple product in itself and the quality of the raw material is incredibly important.
We have deliberately chosen restrained aromas so as not to interfere with the fragile balance of scent between parent and child. All products are very mild and gentle so as not to disturb baby's sensitive skin in its development.
The products are developed, tested, mixed, stirred and bottled in our factory in Vienna's 2nd district. A very elaborate, quality-assured and careful process.
